President's message

Dear friends,
We are pleased that the Executive Committee of INTERASMA has decided to celebrate the Annual Meeting of Western European Regional Chapter for 1997 in the city of Las Palmas of Gran Canaria. For this meeting we will make every effort to obtain the highest scientific level, inviting renowned researchers to participate in the discussion of the main topics.

The Canary Islands, located, some 115 Kms, off the coast of northwest Africa, and a two-hour flight from Madrid, constitute a unique exotic landscape, with the diversity of climate and geography. The seven islands are divided administratively into two provinces: to the east, the Island of Gran Canaria (of which Las Palmas is the capital), and the neighbouring islads of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura; to the west the province of Tenerife (whose capital is Santa Cruz) with the nearby islands of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.

In ancient times, these were known as The Fortunate Islands for the gentle climate and temperatures that range between 16 and 24 degrees throughout the year. Although this is pleasant, the influence of asthma is high, often appearing in early stages, with a predominance of dust mites as well as monosensitivity

The Local Organizing Committee will provide you with an interesting social programme which will enable us to share memorable hours of companionship and friendship.

It will be both a pleasure and an honour, to welcome you to these fortunate Canary Islands, which we are sure you will enjoy and will be provided ample opportunity to share science, culture and entertainment.
